PDA Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes and Injection Devices Conference 2024

From sustainable solutions to digital patient support, we enjoyed discussing how Team supports clients with their drug delivery innovations at PDA Universe of Pre-Filled Syringes.

Michael Herd was joined by Duncan Paterson from Astrazeneca to discuss the journey to develop a sustainable, low-cost reusable autoinjector, whilst John Burke gave a talk about targeted drug delivery and the journey to precise, repeatable and personalised drug delivery.

Lara Zaki provided useful insight into user behaviour, device design and personalisation and Sharlene Phillips explored key strategies for design verification in their guided poster talks.

Reusability simplified: the journey to develop a sustainable, low-cost reusable autoinjector

In this collaborative podium talk, Michael Herd, Team Consulting and Duncan Paterson, AstraZeneca:

  • Explored the crucial challenges and opportunities associated with low-cost reusable autoinjectors and demonstrated how this knowledge focused the teams development activities.
  • Demonstrated how a user centric and iterative development approach yielded innovative solutions to overcome key usability challenges.
  • Described a novel reusable device solution that is comparable with manual injection devices on a sustainability and cost basis per dose, while providing the usability advantages of an autoinjector.

Targeted drug delivery – a journey to precise, repeatable and personalised drug delivery

Drug delivery is evolving and becoming increasingly targeted. John Burke shared key insights and learnings from recent programmes pushing the boundary of drug delivery including: Surgically targeted, cell and gene therapy, personalized medicine and targeted therapies during his tech talk.

Using behaviour design to optimise the patient experience in smart devices and digital health applications

This guided poster talk, led by Lara Zaki:

  • Explored an iterative design framework that de-risks digital health product design by seamlessly integrating best practices in UX design, behaviour science, and human factors.
  • Gave insight into how behaviour design methods can focus your innovation efforts and optimise the success of digitisation.
  • Described how to meaningfully combine behaviour science theory with real user insights to create a guiding UX strategy for digital products.

Strategies for successful design verification

Sharlene Phillips provided key insights in her guided poster talk, including:

  • Design input requirements, including strategies to ensure they are justified and aligned with user needs
  • Test method development and validation, from measurement system capability to fixtures and operators
  • Laboratory testing, including approaches to system suitability tests and more
