Applying Behavioral Science to Explore Perceptions of and Engagement with Sustainable Self-Injection Devices

Thursday 21st May 2026
Session 1: Sustainability
12:05 – 12:20
Charlotte Harris

The medical device industry contributes significant waste and carbon emissions. Sustainability initiatives such as device take-back schemes rely on behavioural commitments from users. There are growing expectations among users that devices should be more sustainable. But what does ‘sustainable’ mean to them?

We conducted research with patients and HCPs to understand what shapes sustainability perceptions and explore techniques to facilitate the behaviour change. Looking at single-use, multi-use, and reusable device concepts, the study explored the sustainability features that resonate most with users.

Patient-Centric Digital Education for Autoinjectors: A Case Study from Concept to Deployment

Lara Zaki and Novartis

This case study describes the development of patient-facing digital education and support materials, accessible via a QR code on product packaging. The solution supplements the approved Instructions for Use (IFU) and provides patients with accessible, interactive resources including animated educational videos, step-by-step digital instructions, and a virtual practice feature leveraging smartphone camera functionality for an augmented-reality–like experience.
