A billion-dollar innovation – OrganOx acquired by global MedTech company

OrganOx, a University of Oxford spin-out, has been acquired by global MedTech company, Terumo, for $1.5 billion. This comes after OrganOx recently won the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award for its pioneering devices that keep donor livers and kidneys alive outside the body for extended periods, increasing the number of successful transplants and saving lives worldwide.

Now officially a “unicorn”, the award-winning OrganOx sets a hugely aspirational example for innovative MedTech start-ups.

OrganOx partnered with Team Consulting to transform their idea into a world-first, fully autonomous medical system, taking the initial concept all the way through to the successful launch of a groundbreaking solution.

What is the OrganOx metra®?

The OrganOx metra® is a world-first system that enables transplant livers to be stored safely for longer. It also provides surgeons with live data, helping them to make better informed decisions about when it’s safe to transplant. The system has eradicated night-time operations and cut healthcare costs significantly.

What has the technology achieved?

The technology has already enabled over 6,000 transplants across four continents, with hospitals reporting up to a 30% increase in procedures and significantly reduced waiting list mortality.

A paper published in April 2018, detailing the results of a randomised trial of over 200 liver transplants, found that preserving livers in the metra® device both improved liver quality and reduced the number of organs discarded.

How did Team Consulting support the development of the OrganOx metra® system?

From initial proof-of-principle to manufacture, we helped develop the device’s complex electro-mechanical systems, sterile fluid circuits, embedded software, industrial design and touchscreen interface. The result was a portable, operator-independent platform capable of keeping an organ alive and functional during storage, transport or while connected directly to a patient.
