Engineering analysis

To solve your problem, we need to understand it. Our mechanical engineers can build theoretical descriptions of your device using tools such as mathematical modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and tolerance analysis.

This enables us to troubleshoot, challenge and optimise the critical aspects of a system, to predict its performance and improve function and reliability.

Mathematical modelling

Every device is different. Developing a mathematical model of your device helps us to understand its design limits and fine-tune its performance. Accurate models reduce development time, re-design and prototyping costs.

Our models can be based on first principles of mechanics and fluid dynamics, experimental data produced by yourself or us, or a combination of both. From simple linear models to extensive, time-dependent modelling of entire systems, we have the expertise and the tools to thoroughly understand what makes your device tick.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

We use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to simulate complex physics that may be found in your medical devices.

We have expertise in applying CFD across a wide range of challenges in medical device development including: optimising the de-agglomeration of dose particles in dry powder inhalers, controlling the temperature uniformity and species mixing of liquid samples in diagnostics instruments, and enhancing the spray delivery of surgical haemostats.

To help you predict and improve the performance of your device, our mechanical engineers can adapt and customise CFD tools as required. With careful validation of the predictions using lab testing, we can then use CFD to quantify additional key metrics that would otherwise be difficult to measure experimentally. This enables efficient iteration of designs towards optimum solutions.

Finite element analysis

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can help us predict the physical performance of your device, and gain insight into its design. We can perform FEA from the initial concept stages of development right through to industrialisation, reducing testing requirements and thus time to market.

Our mechanical engineers have expertise using specialist FEA software and CAD-integrated packages which means we select the right level of analysis for your requirements, whether it is optimising geometry for impact, problem-solving for failed mechanisms, or performing sensitivity analysis to predict the forces experienced by the user.

Engineering analysis

We know that theoretical analyses are only as good as the data you put in. When this data is not available, our team can help to generate model inputs and then validate the results using a range of tools such as force-displacement testing, air pressure, thermal measurements, and high-speed video.
